We are

From the beginning

Let's take it back to 1999

Mats showed up at Ray’s house with 1/2 ton of grapes and a used barrel from Etude. The grapes were from his patient at St. Francis Hospital (John Louvau). They got talking about wine and John suggested to Mats to try making some himself. We made wine in Ray’s living room and in 2000 included a full barrel of Syrah from Watts Vineyard in Lodi.

In 2005 we became fully bonded as Travieso. Our philosophy is to keep tight control over the grapes in the vineyard by purchasing only by the acre. Maintaining a close working relationship with the grower is key.

Our Winemaker

Meet Ray Sliter

Ray grew up in Menlo Park, California as the oldest in a family of four boys. His first job was ice cream scooper until he found an after-school job as a computer operator. To this day Ray is still with the same organization as a marine geologist. During his career as a geologist, Ray has conducted fieldwork from the south Pacific to the northern reaches of Alaska. He also spent a year at the South Pole Station in Antarctica. Ray enjoys riding his bike to work, sharing fine wines and food with friends, and promoting local music groups by hosting houseconcerts.

What our traviesitos are saying

Find us on

We can't say enough about the excellent quality of the wines. One of our favorites over the years has been the Sangiovese (The Other Program). We just popped a 2009 last night, which is what prompted us to add to the 5 star reviews they have already earned.

This is an outstanding winery in an unexpected location! IMO some of the best price performance wine you can buy in the Bay Area--the winemaker, Ray, makes the wine in small amounts with real love, and some really enjoyable blends.

Their reds are usually full of big, earthy spicy flavors and the whites tend to be complex, multi-dimensional concoctions. But the best thing about Travieso is the informal, casual communal atmosphere. The next best thing is their unpretentious location inside a dusty industrial park in my hometown of Campbell. The label artwork inspired by Mexican folklore is yet another unique, fun quirk of this place.

This place is a hidden gem of Campbell. Tucked-away in an industrial park, you wouldn't expect to find a maker of such exceptional wines.

Winemaker Ray Sliter has a small operation in Campbell, producing some really amazing wines, at very reasonable prices.

Our favorites are the Cabernets and the Grenaches. Due to zoning, they are only open on Saturdays.
